EMS CARE | EMT NCCP | Day 1 Recertification

8 Hours CME Credit

This course meets the NREMTs latest requirement for EMTs, the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) and is approved by the State of CT. This program consists of the equivalent of 40 live classroom hours – this is the first 8 hours – all online and self-paced.  This is part of the National component (20 hours).  Topics include airway and respiration, cardiovascular, trauma, medical, and EMS operations.

The course works as follows:

  • You can take the course on-line only at your pace.  Take the quizzes too.  Your test scores will be submitted to the instructor who will advise the state when you pass.
  • You must take the lessons in order.  You can go backward as you wish to review materials.
  • Additionally, there will be scheduled times to communicate with the instructor via MissionCIT’s online classroom.  You will be advised of the timing with a link to join these interactive learning sessions.
  • For the practical components, you will be advised venue and timing options.  Physical Classes may be restricted to a size compliant with local social distancing ordinances then in effect.
  • You must pass the quiz for each Topic with a score of 75% or better to receive credit.  There are 6 topics on Day 1 – and 6 quizzes.
  • All administrative aspects of the course are managed and submitted by MissionCIT.

Topic 1 | Ventilation, Perfusion, and Shock: Understanding Pathophysiology
Includes 5 Lessons comprised of 73 slides and 2 videos. Plus a test with 11 questions.

Topic 2 | Airway Management
And here are six key Core concepts to take away from this chapter: Number 1, the Physiology of the airway. Number 2, the Pathophysiology of the airway. Number 3, How to recognize an adequate or an inadequate airway. Number 4, How to open an airway. Number 5, How to use airway adjuncts. And number 6, the Principles and techniques of suctioning.

Topic 3 | Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)
There are 7 key concepts in the LVAD topic. At the end, You should know: First, What is an LVAD and why is it used. Next, the standard Heart Failure Classifications. Third, is How to Assess an LVAD Patient. Number four is to understand How an LVAD works. Fifth is How to evaluate an LVAD device and manage malfunctions if needed. Number 6 is the immediate information you need to gather on scene in case you need to call for ALS and the Type of Advanced Life Support you may require Finally, you will review the Generation 2 and 3 LVAD devices you may encounter. And, there will be a 10 question quiz at the end. You will need to answer 75% of the questions accurately to pass.

Topic 4 | Diabetic Emergencies and Altered Mental Status
There are several core concepts in this topic. We begin with the Pathophysiology of the reticular activating system; and then continue with the General approaches to assessing a patient with an altered mental status. Then we discuss the causes, assessment and care of the patients starting with   diabetes and various diabetic emergencies. We then discuss a variety of conditions that may cause an altered mental status, beginning with sepsis; We then continue with seizure disorders, Next we discuss T I A’s and stroke, and finishing with dizziness and syncope.   Finally, there will be a chapter review before the 15-question quiz at the end. You will need to answer 75% of the questions accurately to get credit for this topic.

Topic 5 | Bleeding and Shock
We begin with the Circulatory System, and then continue with the various aspects of controlling bleeding. Then we discuss the causes, assessment and care of patients experiencing Hypoperfusion or shock. And, There are several core concepts in this topic including: • How to recognize arterial, venous, and capillary bleeding, and • How to evaluate the severity of external bleeding , and next • How to control external bleeding, and then • Signs, symptoms, and care of a patient with internal bleeding, and finally • Signs, symptoms, and care of a patient with shock. After the session on shock, there will be a chapter review before the quiz at the end. You will need to answer 75% of the questions accurately to get credit for this topic.

Topic 6 | Head Neck and Spine Injuries
We begin our lessons with the Anatomy & Physiology of the Head Neck and Spine, and then continue with the various aspects of related trauma. We then discuss likely methods of injury, assessment, and care of these patients. And due to their special nature, we examine how to prepare and transport these patients.
